Dapto Water Hardness & Quality Report (2026)

Dapto's drinking water is supplied by Wollongong City Council Water, drawing from Cordeaux Dam and Avon Dam on the Illawarra Plateau via the Illawarra Water Supply Scheme for the Wollongong City LGA outer southern Illawarra distribution in New South Wales. Water hardness in Dapto is measured at 20.5 mg/L — classified as very soft — well below the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) aesthetic guideline of 200 mg/L published by NHMRC. Dapto — a large outer southern Wollongong suburb on the Illawarra Plain at the foot of the Illawarra Escarpment adjacent to Kembla Grange and Albion Park, known for the Dapto Dogs greyhound racing club, the Dapto Community Hub, the Lake Illawarra foreshore, and the outer southern Wollongong industrial and residential community connecting the Illawarra coastal plain to the Southern Highlands — receives one of the softest supplies of any city in the Wollongong supply network, dramatically softer than the harder Woonona sub-zone (153 mg/L) in the same supply.

Dapto's extremely soft supply reflects a predominantly Cordeaux Dam direct supply routing at the outer southern Wollongong Illawarra sub-zone. The Cordeaux Dam catchment drains the upper Cordeaux River on the Illawarra Plateau — protected Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone and Permian sandstone terrain of exceptional chemical resistance — contributing essentially zero dissolved minerals to the supply. At 20.5 mg/L and TDS 32.8 mg/L, Dapto's supply is one of the softest in regional NSW, comparable to the City West Water inner Melbourne very soft cluster (Sunshine North 20.5 mg/L) and dramatically contrasting with the hard Woonona (153 mg/L) and figtree (60 mg/L) sub-zones in the same Wollongong supply network.

Dapto residents accumulate virtually no limescale on taps and in kettles — scale build-up is negligible. Hot water systems experience minimal scale accumulation.
