What Makes Oak Bay's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: ReservoirTDS: 26.5 mg/LpH: 7

The Capital Regional District (CRD) Water Services delivers drinking water to Oak Bay and the wider Greater Victoria area, a region home to over 250,000 residents on the Saanich Peninsula and southern Vancouver Island. All water originates from Sooke Lake Reservoir, located in the Sooke Hills about 30 kilometers northwest of Oak Bay. Water is drawn from the reservoir and undergoes primary treatment at the Goldstream Water Treatment Plant, where it's filtered, chlorinated, and disinfected with UV light. The CRD's regional network then distributes the treated water to Oak Bay, with no reliance on local groundwater or other water sources. The Sooke Watershed, a 354-square-kilometer expanse of protected old-growth forest, captures rainfall from the Pacific Ocean's rain shadow.

The geology beneath this watershed is primarily composed of Coast Range Batholith granodiorite and Mesozoic-age metavolcanic rocks. There are no significant karst formations or limestone aquifers present. This type of igneous terrain naturally produces very soft water because the calcium and magnesium-bearing silicate rocks weather slowly. Glacial activity left behind thin soils that allow for rapid water infiltration, but this process picks up minimal minerals. Consequently, the water maintains a stable, low-mineral profile throughout the year.

Because the water is very soft, you'll find minimal scale buildup on your pipes, water heaters, and other fixtures. This means less maintenance and longer appliance lifespans, with no need for a water softener. Soap lathers exceptionally well, and you'll notice no spotting on your glassware or laundry. Your hot water heaters and dishwashers will operate efficiently without any loss of performance. In fact, a water softener isn't recommended, as it could strip away essential minerals. Instead, focus on changing filters regularly and only descale if you notice iron staining from occasional raw water inputs. The water quality is excellent, with a typical pH between 7.5 and 8.0, and it consistently meets or exceeds all provincial and federal guidelines.

Geology & Source: Sooke Hills; granitic and volcanic bedrock; low calcium and magnesium; very soft water
