What Makes Tsawwassen's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: ReservoirTDS: 67.2 mg/LpH: 7.1

The Tsawwassen First Nation manages its local drinking water distribution, but the supply itself comes from Metro Vancouver. Raw water is primarily drawn from the Capilano River watershed and Seymour Reservoir, with additional sources in the Lynn Valley areas. These waters undergo treatment at large facilities like the Capilano Water Treatment Plant and the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant before reaching the Tsawwassen peninsula in Delta Municipality, British Columbia.

The water's journey begins in the Pacific Coast Ranges, specifically the protected Seymour-Capilano watershed. This vast, forested area is characterized by granitic and metavolcanic rock formations belonging to the Jurassic-Cretaceous Coast Plutonic Complex. Because there's very little limestone or dolomite in the geology, the water picks up minimal dissolved solids, resulting in a naturally very soft supply. The steep, granitic slopes and dense coniferous forest also promote rapid runoff, limiting the amount of minerals that leach into the water.

Because the water is very soft, homeowners in Tsawwassen will notice less scale buildup in appliances such as pipes, water heaters, kettles, and dishwashers. This can help extend the lifespan of these items and reduce cleaning frequency. Soaps and detergents will also lather more easily, requiring less product. While generally beneficial, extremely soft water can sometimes contribute to minor corrosion in older galvanized pipes over extended periods. If this becomes a concern, using phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors might be considered, though a water softener isn't typically necessary. Faucets and fixtures tend to stay cleaner with fewer mineral deposits, simplifying upkeep.

Geology & Source: granitic and metamorphic bedrock; Mesozoic Coast Belt plutonic complex; low mineral content due to limited contact with carbonate-rich soils or limestones creates soft water
