What Makes Flitwick's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Affinity Water supplies Flitwick, a commuter town in Central Bedfordshire south of Bedford — a rapidly growing community on the Bedford–London Midland Mainline corridor that has expanded significantly as a London commuter hub — from Chiltern Chalk aquifer boreholes in the south Bedfordshire chalk zone, treated at Ivel Valley Water Treatment Works near Shefford. At 300.5 mg/L (21.1°Clark) and a TDS of 896.3 mg/L, Flitwick's water is extremely hard — among the hardest in Bedfordshire — consistent with the deeply saturated Cretaceous Chalk aquifer that provides exceptionally mineralised groundwater to the Affinity Water south Bedfordshire chalk distribution zone.
Flitwick lies on the Greensand Ridge fringe at the edge of the Chiltern–Bedfordshire Chalk belt, where the Upper Chalk (Cretaceous) dips northward from the Chilterns and is freely recharged from the chalk crest. Affinity Water draws on chalk boreholes in the south Bedfordshire chalk zone, extracting deeply mineralised calcium bicarbonate groundwater with TDS 896.3 mg/L at 300.5 mg/L hardness — a supply approaching 1000 mg/L TDS, placing Flitwick in the top tier of extremely hard water zones that characterise the Affinity Water Chiltern chalk belt from Tring through Leighton Buzzard to Flitwick.
At 300.5 mg/L, limescale is an extreme and relentless household problem in Flitwick. Kettles must be descaled weekly to prevent rapid element failure. The combi-boiler faces very high risk of premature breakdown without a properly fitted, annually replaced scale inhibitor and regular professional servicing. Washing-up liquid barely lathers without very generous quantities of product. Taps, shower heads, and basin fittings develop heavy chalk encrustation within days; a weekly descaling with white vinegar or a proprietary product is essential. A whole-house water softener is very strongly recommended for all Flitwick households.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Affinity Water from Chiltern Chalk aquifer boreholes in the south Bedfordshire chalk zone — treated at Ivel Valley Water Treatment Works — produces extremely hard water at 300.5 mg/L (21.1°Clark).
