What Makes Thamesmead's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: MixedTDS: 924 mg/LpH: 8.5

Thamesmead, the large post-war housing estate spanning the Bexley and Greenwich border on the south bank of the Thames in south-east London, is served by Thames Water. Supply to this part of outer east London draws on a blend of abstracted River Thames water treated at Crossness Water Treatment Works and deep chalk groundwater pumped from the North Kent and East London Chalk Aquifer. The exceptionally high TDS of 924 mg/L is one of the most elevated recorded in the United Kingdom and indicates that a very high proportion of the supply is derived from deep, long-residence chalk groundwater, with minimal dilution from softer surface-water sources. Distribution is managed through Thames Water's south-east London trunk mains.

The Cretaceous Chalk Aquifer beneath east and south-east London and north Kent is thick and deeply confined, with groundwater residence times of decades to centuries. Over those timescales, water dissolves calcium and magnesium bicarbonate from the chalk matrix at saturation-level concentrations, producing exceptionally hard groundwater. In Thamesmead's supply zone, the chalk is further mineralised by contributions from the Thanet Sands and marine-influenced deep aquifer layers, explaining the TDS far exceeding what calcium carbonate alone would produce. This is among the hardest urban water supplies in England.

At 319 mg/L Thamesmead's tap water is extremely hard, and limescale accumulation is severe and rapid. Kettles will develop a thick white crust within days of use and should be descaled weekly to prevent element failure. Shower screens become opaque from limescale within weeks without daily wiping. Combi-boilers, washing machines and dishwashers are at serious risk of scale damage without proper inline scale inhibitors or regular servicing. Using extra washing-up liquid is essential. A whole-house water softener is strongly recommended for Thamesmead households — the scale burden on plumbing, heating systems and appliances is among the most demanding in the capital.

Geology & Source: Supplied by Thames Water from the Thames and Lee Valley Chalk Aquifer blend — east London chalk groundwater combined with Thames surface abstraction — produces extremely hard water at 319 mg/L (22.4°Clark).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thamesmead's water safe to drink?
Yes. Thamesmead's water meets all federal safety standards. The hardness is 319 mg/L (Very Hard), which is safe to drink. High hardness affects appliances and taste, but poses no health risk.
Do I need a water softener in Thamesmead?
At 319 mg/L (Very Hard), Thamesmead's water will cause significant limescale on kettles, washing machines, and water heaters. A water softener or descaler is strongly recommended to extend appliance lifespan and reduce energy bills by up to 43%.
How does Thamesmead compare to the United Kingdom average?
The United Kingdom national average is 183 mg/L. Thamesmead at 319 mg/L is 136 mg/L above the national average. The softest major city is Livingston at just 8.5 mg/L.
