What Makes Bromborough's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
United Utilities supplies Bromborough, a town and former industrial port on the south Wirral Peninsula in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral near Eastham, from Llyn Vyrnwy in the Cambrian Mountains of Powys via the historic Vyrnwy aqueduct, treated at regional works before distribution across the Wirral Peninsula. At 49.5 mg/L (3.5°Clark) and a TDS of just 110.2 mg/L, Bromborough's water is very soft, consistent with the clean Welsh upland reservoir supply that characterises the entire Wirral and Merseyside water zone.
Llyn Vyrnwy, created by Liverpool Corporation in 1888 by impounding the Afon Vyrnwy in the Berwyn Mountains, drains ancient Silurian greywacke and Ordovician volcanic rocks with thin, acid upland soils — one of the most calcium-poor catchment geologies in Wales. This produces characteristically very soft water with near-zero dissolved calcium. United Utilities continues to operate the Vyrnwy aqueduct to supply the Wirral Peninsula and Merseyside, delivering this very soft Welsh mountain water to Bromborough with TDS just 110.2 mg/L — one of the most mineral-free tap water supplies in North West England.
At 49.5 mg/L, Bromborough's very soft water causes almost no limescale problems. Kettles need only occasional descaling every three to four months. The combi-boiler benefits from a standard scale inhibitor as a standard precaution. Washing-up liquid lathers abundantly with minimal product. Taps and shower heads remain essentially free from limescale with only occasional maintenance. As with all very soft supplies, residents with older lead or copper pipework should briefly run the cold tap before drinking, as soft water is mildly corrosive to metal plumbing — United Utilities' standard precautionary recommendation throughout the Vyrnwy Wirral supply zone.
Geology & Source: Supplied by United Utilities from Llyn Vyrnwy in the Cambrian Mountains via the Vyrnwy aqueduct — treated at Oswestry Water Treatment Works — produces very soft water at 49.5 mg/L (3.5°Clark).
