What Makes Neston's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
United Utilities supplies Neston on the Dee Estuary in Cheshire West and Chester on the southern Wirral Peninsula, from Llyn Vyrnwy — the great Victorian reservoir in the Cambrian Mountains of Powys, Wales — via the historic Vyrnwy aqueduct and treated at regional works. At 56 mg/L (3.9°Clark) and a TDS of 126.4 mg/L, Neston's water is very soft — reflecting the ancient Ordovician and Silurian metamorphic and volcanic rock catchment that drains into Llyn Vyrnwy, producing one of the softest municipal water supplies in north-west England.
Llyn Vyrnwy, created by Liverpool Corporation in 1888 by damming the upper Afon Vyrnwy, drains the Berwyn Mountains and Cambrian uplands — a landscape of ancient Silurian greywacke shale and Ordovician volcanic and metamorphic rock with thin, acid, calcium-poor moorland soils. This geology yields pure, very soft water with near-zero dissolved calcium, producing the characteristic low-mineral supply with TDS 126.4 mg/L that serves the Wirral Peninsula and Cheshire West communities. United Utilities continues to operate the Vyrnwy aqueduct first constructed to serve Liverpool, extending its very soft Welsh mountain water supply to Neston and the wider Dee Estuary communities.
At 56 mg/L, Neston's very soft water is comfortable for domestic use with minimal limescale concerns. Kettles need only occasional descaling every three to four months. The combi-boiler benefits from a standard scale inhibitor as a precaution. Washing-up liquid lathers well with small amounts of product. Taps and shower heads remain clean with minimal maintenance. Residents in older properties with lead or copper pipes should briefly run the cold tap before drinking, as soft water is naturally corrosive to metal plumbing — a standard precaution recommended by United Utilities throughout the Vyrnwy supply zone.
Geology & Source: Supplied by United Utilities from Llyn Vyrnwy in the Cambrian Mountains of north Wales via the Vyrnwy aqueduct — treated at Oswestry Water Treatment Works — produces very soft water at 56 mg/L (3.9°Clark).
