What Makes Westhoughton's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: MixedTDS: 192.4 mg/LpH: 7.4

Westhoughton, the Borough of Bolton town on the south-west Lancashire coal field plain between Bolton and Wigan, is served by United Utilities from the West Pennine Moors reservoir network. The principal sources are Wayoh and Entwistle Reservoirs in the Turton moorlands above Bolton, and Jumbles Reservoir in the Bradshaw Brook valley — all impounded on tributaries draining the Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Namurian shale moorlands of the West Pennines. Water is treated at Prescot and Bolton Water Treatment Works before distribution south to Westhoughton. The very low TDS of only 192.4 mg/L confirms an overwhelmingly soft, calcium-poor surface water supply with minimal groundwater blending — among the softest supply profiles in the entire Greater Manchester area. The Wayoh and Entwistle catchments above Turton drain exclusively over calcium-depleted gritstone moorland, producing naturally very soft water.

The Carboniferous Millstone Grit (Namurian Shale and Gritstone) forming the West Pennine Moors moorland catchment above Turton and Edgworth is an impermeable silica-rich formation yielding rapid, low-mineral moorland runoff. Minimal calcium carbonate is present in these rocks, and the soft peaty moorland water draining into Wayoh and Entwistle requires little more than standard treatment before distribution. The result is an inherently soft supply, with the 81.5 mg/L hardness reflecting only modest mineral acquisition during treatment and distribution in the Westhoughton network.

At 81.5 mg/L Westhoughton's water is soft and limescale accumulation is very low. Kettles may need descaling only every two to three months — a light white vinegar rinse is all that is required. Shower screens remain clear for extended periods. Washing-up liquid lathers easily with small amounts. Combi-boilers and white goods face very low scaling risk and enjoy extended lifespans compared with hard-water areas. As with all soft north-west England water, Westhoughton's older cast-iron pipework may benefit from periodic corrosion checks, as soft water can be slightly more aggressive toward unlined metal pipes than hard water.

Geology & Source: Supplied by United Utilities from Wayoh, Entwistle and Jumbles Reservoirs in the West Pennine Moors — soft Carboniferous Millstone Grit moorland catchment — produces soft water at 81.5 mg/L (5.7°Clark).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Westhoughton's water safe to drink?
Yes. Westhoughton's water meets all federal safety standards. The hardness is 81.5 mg/L (Moderately Hard), which is safe to drink. High hardness affects appliances and taste, but poses no health risk.
Do I need a water softener in Westhoughton?
Westhoughton's water is moderately hard at 81.5 mg/L. A water softener is generally not necessary, though a carbon filter can improve taste and remove any remaining chlorine.
How does Westhoughton compare to the United Kingdom average?
The United Kingdom national average is 183 mg/L. Westhoughton at 81.5 mg/L is 101 mg/L below the national average. The softest major city is Livingston at just 8.5 mg/L.
