What Makes Cambuslang's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Cambuslang, the South Lanarkshire town on the south bank of the Clyde valley east of Glasgow, is served by Scottish Water. Like most of the Greater Glasgow area, Cambuslang's primary supply comes from Loch Katrine in the Trossachs National Park, carried south via the Victorian Loch Katrine Aqueduct to Milngavie Water Treatment Works, where UV disinfection and fluoridation are applied before distribution through the Glasgow and South Lanarkshire trunk mains network. Scottish Water's Daer Reservoir in the Southern Uplands of South Lanarkshire provides a secondary supply for the Lanarkshire distribution zone. Cambuslang sits in a distribution zone receiving predominantly Loch Katrine-sourced supply, with a very low mineral load reflected in TDS of only 158.8 mg/L.
Loch Katrine's catchment — Dalradian schist and quartzite terrain of the Trossachs — is one of the most calcium-depleted rock environments in Britain. Rainfall on these ancient metamorphic uplands produces exceptionally clean, soft surface water. Transit through the aqueduct and treatment at Milngavie adds trivial mineral content, and the distribution network's modern lining keeps further dissolution minimal. The result is genuinely very soft water at 71.5 mg/L — barely half the hardness of many English towns and one of the softest urban supplies in the UK.
At 71.5 mg/L Cambuslang has very soft water, which is excellent for household appliances and laundry. Kettles accumulate only the faintest scale film over months of use and need descaling no more than three to four times a year. Washing-up liquid lathers abundantly with a small amount. Shower screens and bathroom surfaces remain clean-looking for extended periods. White goods and combi-boilers face negligible scaling risk. The main practical note for soft water is potential mild corrosiveness to older metallic pipework — homes with pre-1970s lead or unlined copper plumbing should occasionally check for water quality at the tap. Cambuslang residents enjoy the significant convenience and appliance longevity benefits of very soft Scottish water.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Scottish Water from Loch Katrine via the Milngavie aqueduct and the south Clyde distribution network — soft Highland loch water with minimal local mineral pickup — produces soft water at 71.5 mg/L (5.0°Clark).
