What Makes Falkirk's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Falkirk, the central Scotland town famous for the Falkirk Wheel boat-lift and the ancient Antonine Wall, is supplied by Scottish Water from Carron Valley Reservoir in the Kilsyth Hills and the Loch Lomond supply grid. The Carron Valley Reservoir impounds the Endrick Water and Carron tributaries on the Carboniferous volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kilsyth Hills — the southernmost outliers of the Campsie Fells — producing very soft upland water of very low mineral content. Scottish Water supplements the Carron Valley supply with contributions from the Loch Lomond Highland grid (sourced from the very soft Dalradian metamorphic catchment of the southern Highlands), distributed through the central Scotland supply network. The TDS of 33.4 mg/L — one of the lowest in mainland Britain — confirms the very low mineral content.
Falkirk's exceptionally soft water — 19.5 mg/L (1.4°Clark) — reflects the Carboniferous volcanic upland Carron Valley Reservoir and Loch Lomond Highland supply, producing water of remarkable softness. The Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland classifies this supply as very soft.
Limescale is essentially absent in Falkirk homes. At 19.5 mg/L, limescale will not form under any normal domestic circumstances — kettles need descaling perhaps twice a year, and taps, showerheads, and shower screens remain completely clear. Washing-up liquid lathers exceptionally well. The very soft supply is mildly corrosive; Scottish Water maintains careful pH control, but Falkirk households in older properties should be aware of the minor plumbing corrosion risk and consider a calcite filter if needed.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Scottish Water from Carron Valley Reservoir and the Loch Lomond supply grid — Falkirk's central Scotland position between Edinburgh and Glasgow draws on Scottish Water's very soft Carron Valley reservoir supply from the Kilsyth Hills and Loch Lomond Highland grid, producing exceptionally soft water at 19.5 mg/L (1.4°Clark).
