What Makes Falkirk's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Scottish Water provides the drinking water for Falkirk and nearby communities in central Scotland. The supply largely comes from surface reservoirs in the Campsie Fells, including Carron Valley and Endrick, along with water from Loch Katrine and other upland catchments within the Clyde and Forth river basin districts. Water treatment takes place at facilities like the Balmore Water Treatment Works and other local plants. Here, raw water from hill lochs undergoes processes such as coagulation, filtration, and disinfection with chlorine, with some facilities also adding fluoride before the water is distributed through the town's extensive pipe network.
The watershed features peaty uplands covering Dalradian metamorphic rocks and granite intrusions. These geological formations, primarily from the Precambrian era, are rich in igneous and metamorphic types rather than soluble limestone. Because the bedrock has low concentrations of calcium and magnesium carbonates, rainwater picks up very few minerals as it travels through the soil and rock. This geological makeup is why the water is characteristically soft, with minimal mineral content, unlike areas further south with significant limestone deposits.
Because Falkirk's water is soft, homeowners generally won't encounter significant limescale buildup in appliances like kettles or water heaters, nor will pipes likely suffer from mineral deposits. You'll notice soap lathers up easily, and there's less of that soapy scum often seen on sinks or in bathtubs. Consequently, installing a water softener isn't typically necessary. For any minor scale that does form on high-use items, occasional descaling is usually sufficient. This lack of hardness means appliances like washing machines and dishwashers can operate efficiently without the mineral-related wear and tear common in harder water regions.
