What Makes Viewpark's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Scottish Water supplies Viewpark in North Lanarkshire, a residential community between Uddingston and Bellshill in the Clyde Valley industrial corridor, from Daer Reservoir on the upper River Clyde in the Southern Uplands, treated at Daer Water Treatment Works and distributed across the central Scotland Clyde Valley network. At 78.5 mg/L (5.5°Clark), Viewpark's water is soft, consistent with the characteristically soft Southern Uplands reservoir supply serving communities throughout the Clyde Valley south of Glasgow.
Daer Reservoir is impounded on the upper Clyde in the Southern Uplands, draining Lower Palaeozoic greywackes, mudstones, and Silurian volcanic rocks — ancient, chemically inert formations with negligible calcium carbonate. Blanket peat on the upland moors further limits mineral dissolution. The resulting soft upland reservoir water is delivered via the Clyde Valley distribution network to North Lanarkshire communities. The modestly higher hardness at 78.5 mg/L compared to the most extreme Scottish soft-water zones reflects minor calcium contributions from the Carboniferous limestone that outcrops in the lower Clyde Valley between the Lanarkshire coalfield communities.
At 78.5 mg/L, Viewpark's soft water is very comfortable for domestic use. Limescale accumulates slowly; descaling the kettle every two to three months is typically adequate. The combi-boiler benefits from a corrosion inhibitor in the central heating circuit. Washing-up liquid lathers well with minimal product. Taps and shower heads remain clean for extended periods with only light occasional maintenance. Residents with older lead or copper pipework in this former industrial area should briefly flush taps before drinking water, as soft water carries elevated corrosion potential for ageing metallic plumbing infrastructure.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Scottish Water from Daer Reservoir on the upper River Clyde in the Southern Uplands — treated at Daer Water Treatment Works — produces soft water at 78.5 mg/L (5.5°Clark).
