What Makes Oxted's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
South East Water supplies Oxted, a Surrey Hills market town on the North Downs at the Surrey–Kent border — surrounded by the Greensand Ridge, Tandridge Hills, and the iconic Chartwell estate country — from North Downs Chalk boreholes in the central Surrey–Kent chalk zone, treated at Tatsfield Water Treatment Works on the North Downs plateau above Oxted. At 292 mg/L (20.5°Clark) and a TDS of 795.2 mg/L, Oxted's water is extremely hard, consistent with the deeply saturated Upper Chalk aquifer of the Surrey–Kent North Downs that delivers some of the hardest water in South East England to communities along the chalk escarpment.
Oxted sits directly on the Upper Chalk (Cretaceous) of the North Downs scarp, where the chalk is at its thickest and most productive aquifer configuration in Surrey. South East Water's Tatsfield borehole supply draws on this deeply mineralised chalk, yielding calcium bicarbonate-saturated groundwater at 292 mg/L with TDS 795.2 mg/L. This is consistent with the extreme hardness pattern across the Surrey–Kent North Downs chalk belt, where communities from Ashtead (321 mg/L) through Reigate and Oxted to Sevenoaks receive some of the hardest water in Britain.
At 292 mg/L, limescale is an extreme and persistent household problem in Oxted. Kettles must be descaled weekly to prevent rapid element failure. The combi-boiler faces very high risk of premature breakdown without a properly fitted, annually replaced scale inhibitor and frequent professional servicing. Washing-up liquid barely lathers without very generous quantities of product. Taps, shower heads, and basin fittings develop heavy chalk encrustation within days; a weekly descaling with white vinegar or a proprietary product is essential to prevent permanent staining. A whole-house water softener is very strongly recommended for all Oxted households.
Geology & Source: Supplied by South East Water from North Downs Chalk boreholes in the Surrey–Kent border chalk zone — treated at Tatsfield Water Treatment Works — produces extremely hard water at 292 mg/L (20.5°Clark).
