What Makes Peacehaven's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
South East Water supplies Peacehaven, a coastal town in East Sussex on the cliff tops east of Brighton. Supply is drawn from deep boreholes in the South Downs Chalk aquifer and from blended surface water sources, treated at Falmer Water Treatment Works and other East Sussex facilities before distribution along the cliff-top coastal strip. At 283.5 mg/L (19.9°Clark), Peacehaven's water is very hard, driven by the thick South Downs Chalk that rises immediately inland and provides the primary groundwater source for coastal communities along this stretch of Sussex.
Peacehaven sits directly at the southern face of the South Downs chalk escarpment — a dramatic chalk clifftop landscape that plunges to the sea. The chalk here is Upper Cretaceous Senonian age — thick, white, pure chalk with very high porosity and permeability that makes it one of England's most productive aquifers. Groundwater from the chalk dip slope and cliff-face aquifer percolates through hundreds of metres of pure limestone before reaching boreholes or spring lines, emerging with very high calcium bicarbonate content that defines the hard water of the East Sussex coastal strip.
Limescale is a significant daily challenge in Peacehaven. Kettles require descaling fortnightly to prevent element damage and calcium deposits in drinks. The combi-boiler needs a properly fitted scale inhibitor to guard against heat exchanger damage from the sustained chalk-derived calcium load, and annual professional servicing is essential. Washing-up liquid produces noticeably reduced lather; considerably more product is needed per wash. Taps, shower heads, and basin mixers develop heavy limescale deposits within days to a week; a twice-weekly descaling wipe with white vinegar or a proprietary product is advisable, and a whole-house water softener is strongly recommended.
Geology & Source: Supplied by South East Water from the South Downs Chalk aquifer via deep boreholes — treated at Falmer and regional East Sussex works — produces very hard water at 283.5 mg/L (19.9°Clark).
