What Makes Uckfield's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: MixedTDS: 749.7 mg/LpH: 8.3

South East Water supplies Uckfield, a market town in the Low Weald of East Sussex. Supply is drawn from the South Downs Chalk aquifer via deep boreholes and from the Lower Greensand ridge springs at Barcombe on the River Ouse, treated at Barcombe Water Treatment Works and regional East Sussex facilities before distribution across the Weald and down into the coastal plain. At 285.5 mg/L (20.0°Clark), Uckfield's water is very hard, driven by the thick South Downs Chalk recharge zone immediately south of the town and the limestone-character springwater from the Greensand ridges.

The South Downs chalk escarpment rises steeply south of Uckfield, and groundwater infiltrating the chalk dip slope passes through hundreds of metres of Upper Cretaceous Chalk before emerging at the spring line or being abstracted from deep boreholes. This extensive underground transit results in maximum calcium carbonate dissolution. The Lower Greensand aquifer of the Weald also yields hard groundwater from calcareous cemented sands. Together, these two geological sources produce the consistently very hard water of the Uckfield supply zone.

Limescale is a significant domestic challenge in Uckfield. Kettles require descaling fortnightly to prevent element damage and calcium particles in drinks. The combi-boiler needs a properly fitted scale inhibitor to guard against heat exchanger damage from the sustained chalk calcium load, and annual professional servicing is essential. Washing-up liquid produces reduced lather; considerably more product is needed per wash than the packaging suggests. Taps, shower heads, and basin mixers develop heavy limescale deposits within a week; a fortnightly descaling wipe with white vinegar or a proprietary product is advisable, and a whole-house water softener is strongly recommended for long-term protection.

Geology & Source: Supplied by South East Water from the South Downs Chalk aquifer and Greensand ridge springs — treated at Barcombe and regional East Sussex works — produces very hard water at 285.5 mg/L (20.0°Clark).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Uckfield's water safe to drink?
Yes. Uckfield's water meets all federal safety standards. The hardness is 285.5 mg/L (Very Hard), which is safe to drink. High hardness affects appliances and taste, but poses no health risk.
Do I need a water softener in Uckfield?
At 285.5 mg/L (Very Hard), Uckfield's water will cause significant limescale on kettles, washing machines, and water heaters. A water softener or descaler is strongly recommended to extend appliance lifespan and reduce energy bills by up to 38%.
How does Uckfield compare to the United Kingdom average?
The United Kingdom national average is 183 mg/L. Uckfield at 285.5 mg/L is 103 mg/L above the national average. The softest major city is Livingston at just 8.5 mg/L.
