What Makes Pontypool's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: ReservoirTDS: 174 mg/LpH: 7.5

Pontypool (Pont-y-pŵl), the historic ironworking town in the Afon Llwyd valley in Torfaen, south-east Wales, is supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from Talybont Reservoir on the south Brecon Beacons and upland reservoirs in the Old Red Sandstone country of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. Welsh Water's eastern valleys supply draws from the Silurian and Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) catchments of the south Brecon Beacons and the Blorenge mountain above Pontypool — ancient sedimentary and volcanic rocks that contribute very little dissolved calcium. The Afon Llwyd rises on the Old Red Sandstone moorland above Blaenavon and the Pontypool area is well within Welsh Water's upland reservoir supply zone for Torfaen. The result is soft water typical of the south-east Wales valley supply.

Pontypool's soft water — 90 mg/L (6.3°Clark) — reflects the Old Red Sandstone and Silurian upland reservoir catchments of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains in Welsh Water's eastern Torfaen supply zone. The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) classifies this supply as soft.

Limescale is very minor in Pontypool. At 90 mg/L, limescale builds slowly — kettles need descaling every two to three months. Combi-boiler heat exchangers accumulate minimal deposits; annual servicing is routine. Showerheads and taps remain largely clear. Washing-up liquid lathers well with the soft Welsh Water Brecon Beacons supply. Limescale is not a significant domestic concern for Pontypool households.

Geology & Source: Supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from Talybont Reservoir and upland reservoirs in the Brecon Beacons and upper Usk catchment — Pontypool's Torfaen eastern valleys position draws on Welsh Water's very soft Brecon Beacons and Old Red Sandstone upland reservoir supply, producing soft water at 90 mg/L (6.3°Clark).
