What Makes Wisbech's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Wisbech, the Cambridgeshire market town on the River Nene in the Fens at the border with Norfolk, is supplied by Anglian Water from the East Anglian Chalk Aquifer and the River Great Ouse Fenland supply network. Anglian Water draws from deep chalk boreholes in the Cretaceous Chalk beneath the Fenland of north Cambridgeshire — the chalk that underlies the whole of the East Anglian Fen basin — and from the Great Ouse at Denver Sluice, which carries chalk calcium from the Chalk Hills of Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The chalk beneath the Fens is extremely productive and yields groundwater with very high dissolved calcium from the deep chalk aquifer with very long residence times. Wisbech and the north Cambridgeshire Fenland receive some of the hardest water in England, with the TDS of 887.9 mg/L among the highest in mainland Britain.
Wisbech's extremely hard water — 299 mg/L (21.0°Clark) — is among the highest in England, reflecting the deep East Anglian Chalk Aquifer of the Cambridgeshire Fenland. The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) classifies this supply as very hard at the extreme upper range.
Limescale is an extreme daily challenge in Wisbech. At 299 mg/L, thick limescale forms in kettles within days requiring weekly descaling. Combi-boiler heat exchangers face extreme limescale risk — annual boiler servicing with full limescale inspection and a polyphosphate scale inhibitor are non-negotiable. Showerheads, taps, and shower screens accumulate very heavy deposits rapidly. Washing-up liquid lathers barely at all. Wisbech homeowners should very strongly consider a whole-house water softener for effective protection against the extreme Fenland chalk supply.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Anglian Water from the East Anglian Chalk Aquifer and River Great Ouse Fenland supply — Wisbech's north Cambridgeshire Fenland position on the Nene draws on Anglian Water's chalk borehole and Great Ouse supply from the deep Cretaceous Chalk of the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk Fenland, producing extremely hard water at 299 mg/L (21.0°Clark).
