What Makes Prestwick's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Scottish Water supplies Prestwick, the coastal town in South Ayrshire on the Firth of Clyde adjacent to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, from Loch Bradan in the Galloway Hills and South Ayrshire upland reservoir catchments, treated at Loch Bradan Water Treatment Works before distribution across the Ayrshire coast. At 35.5 mg/L (2.5°Clark) and a TDS of just 66.3 mg/L, Prestwick's water is extremely soft — among the softest tap water supplies in the British Isles — reflecting the ancient calcium-free rock geology of the Galloway uplands that form the Loch Bradan catchment.
Loch Bradan is impounded on the Water of Girvan headwaters in the Galloway Hills — a remote upland plateau of ancient Ordovician greywacke, Silurian shale, and metamorphic rock, covered by acid blanket bog. This hard, insoluble geology yields essentially zero dissolved calcium to the surface runoff, producing water that is among the most mineral-free in Scotland. Prestwick's 35.5 mg/L hardness with TDS just 66.3 mg/L places it at the extreme soft end of the national water quality spectrum, comparable only to the most isolated Highland loch supplies in Scotland and Wales.
At 35.5 mg/L, limescale is virtually non-existent as a domestic concern in Prestwick. Kettles require only a very occasional light wipe every four to six months at most. The combi-boiler needs no meaningful scale protection, though a basic inhibitor is good practice. Washing-up liquid produces abundant lather with minimal quantities. Taps and shower heads remain pristine with essentially no mineral deposits. However, in any older property with lead or copper pipework, Prestwick's extremely soft, mildly acidic water is naturally aggressive to metal plumbing, and briefly running the cold tap before drinking is strongly recommended — Scottish Water's standard advice throughout the Ayrshire soft water supply zone.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Scottish Water from Loch Bradan and upland South Ayrshire reservoirs — treated at Loch Bradan Water Treatment Works — produces extremely soft water at 35.5 mg/L (2.5°Clark).
