What Makes Aberdare's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: ReservoirTDS: 144.6 mg/LpH: 7.4

Aberdare, the valley town at the head of the Cynon valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf, is supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. The primary sources are upland impoundments in the upper Cynon valley, including Llwynon, Beacons and Neuadd Reservoirs on the southern slopes of the Brecon Beacons, as well as the Nant Melyn and related upland catchments above Hirwaun. These reservoirs are set in terrain dominated by Devonian Old Red Sandstone and the overlying Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Namurian shale — hard, silica-rich formations that yield extremely soft runoff. Water is treated at Upper Neuadd Water Treatment Works before distribution down the Cynon valley to Aberdare and Mountain Ash.

The Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous gritstone catchments of the upper Cynon valley are among the most mineralogically inert in Wales. These iron-rich, calcium-poor sandstones and conglomerates contribute negligible calcium or magnesium bicarbonate to surface runoff, producing reservoir water of very low hardness. The result is a supply at only 79 mg/L — genuinely soft by any classification — with TDS of just 144.6 mg/L, reflecting a clean, low-mineral moorland water character. This is notably softer than towns in the lower valleys and eastern coalfield fringe, where mixing with harder groundwater slightly raises mineral content.

At 79 mg/L Aberdare has soft water and limescale is barely a concern for most households. Kettles may show a very faint scale film after months of use, but descaling every two to three months with a brief white vinegar rinse is more than adequate. Shower screens and taps remain relatively clean. Washing-up liquid produces excellent lather with a small amount. Combi-boilers and white goods appliances benefit from minimal scaling, although an annual service remains good practice. One practical note: soft water can be slightly aggressive to older unlined metallic pipework — if the property has original lead or copper plumbing, periodic checks for corrosion are advisable. Overall, Aberdare residents enjoy the convenience of very soft, appliance-friendly tap water.

Geology & Source: Supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from upland reservoirs in the Cynon valley and Brecon Beacons fringe — predominantly Carboniferous gritstone and Devonian Old Red Sandstone catchments — produces soft water at 79 mg/L (5.5°Clark).
