What Makes Rhondda's Water Unique?

Local geology and source profile

Source: ReservoirTDS: 117.6 mg/LpH: 7.3

Rhondda, the valley community in Rhondda Cynon Taf in the South Wales Coalfield, is supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from upland impounding reservoirs in the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach valley headwaters. Welsh Water's reservoir network in the Rhondda uplands — including former supply reservoirs in the coalfield uplands above Treorchy and Ferndale — collects rainfall from the Carboniferous upland moorland and plantations of the Mynydd Maen and Mynydd y Gwair ridges. The Rhondda valleys drain over Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Coal Measures — the sandstones, shales, and coal-bearing strata of the South Wales Coalfield — which are relatively insoluble and yield soft, lightly mineralised runoff. Water is treated at Welsh Water's facilities before distribution to the Rhondda valley communities.

Rhondda's soft water — 68 mg/L (4.8°Clark) — reflects the Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Coal Measures catchment geology. The Rhondda uplands are underlain by the Upper Carboniferous Coal Measures — sandstones, mudstones, and coal seams — which are largely insoluble and yield water with very low calcium content. This places the Rhondda firmly in the soft water zone of the Drinking Water Inspectorate Wales classification, consistent with most of the South Wales valleys' coalfield upland supply.

Limescale is minor in Rhondda. At 68 mg/L, limescale builds slowly and kettles need descaling every two to three months at most. Combi-boiler heat exchangers accumulate minimal deposits and annual servicing is routine good practice rather than a limescale urgency. Showerheads and taps remain largely clear of deposits. Washing-up liquid lathers very well with the soft South Wales coalfield supply. Limescale is rarely a serious concern in the Rhondda valley — the soft upland reservoir supply makes it one of the less challenging domestic water situations in Wales.

Geology & Source: Supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from Rhondda Fawr and Fach valley reservoirs in the South Wales Coalfield uplands — the Rhondda's supply draws from upland moorland reservoirs over Carboniferous sandstone and shale, producing soft water at 68 mg/L (4.8°Clark).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rhondda's water safe to drink?
Yes. Rhondda's water meets all federal safety standards. The hardness is 68 mg/L (Moderately Hard), which is safe to drink. High hardness affects appliances and taste, but poses no health risk.
Do I need a water softener in Rhondda?
Rhondda's water is moderately hard at 68 mg/L. A water softener is generally not necessary, though a carbon filter can improve taste and remove any remaining chlorine.
How does Rhondda compare to the United Kingdom average?
The United Kingdom national average is 183 mg/L. Rhondda at 68 mg/L is 115 mg/L below the national average. The softest major city is Livingston at just 8.5 mg/L.
