What Makes Bridgend's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Bridgend, the south Wales market town at the confluence of the Ogmore and Garw rivers, is supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from the Llangeinor and upland valley reservoirs in the Ogmore and Garw valley catchments above Bridgend, supplemented by the Llyn Brianne and broader Welsh Water south Wales supply network. The upland Ogmore and Garw valley catchments drain the high Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Coal Measures moorland of the South Wales Coalfield — the peat moorland above the industrial valleys of mid-Glamorgan. These upland moorlands drain very insoluble ancient sandstone and coal measure rocks, yielding very soft water at the reservoir impoundments. Welsh Water treats and distributes this soft coalfield moorland supply to Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan coastal area.
Bridgend's soft water — 62 mg/L (4.3°Clark) — reflects the Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Coal Measures moorland upland reservoir chemistry of the south Wales supply. The sandstone and gritstone moorland above the Ogmore and Garw valleys is essentially calcium-free, and the TDS of 103.9 mg/L confirms very low total mineral content. The Drinking Water Inspectorate Wales classifies this supply as soft.
Limescale is minor in Bridgend. At 62 mg/L, limescale builds slowly and kettles need descaling every two to three months. Combi-boiler heat exchangers accumulate minimal deposits; annual servicing is routine good practice. Showerheads and taps remain largely clear. Washing-up liquid lathers very well with the soft south Wales coalfield supply. Limescale is not a significant domestic concern for Bridgend households on the Welsh Water upland supply.
Geology & Source: Supplied by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water from the Ogmore and Garw valley upland reservoirs — Bridgend's Vale of Glamorgan and Ogmore valley position draws on Welsh Water's very soft upland reservoir supply from Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Coal Measures moorland of the South Wales Coalfield fringe, producing soft water at 62 mg/L (4.3°Clark).
