What Makes Prestatyn's Water Unique?
Local geology and source profile
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water supplies Prestatyn, a coastal town in Denbighshire on the north Wales coast, from upland reservoir catchments in the Clwydian Range and other north Wales highland areas, treated at regional north Wales works before distribution along the Clwyd coast. At 84 mg/L (5.9°Clark), Prestatyn's water is soft, reflecting the predominantly acidic, metamorphic and sedimentary catchments of the north Wales uplands that produce naturally soft surface water with low mineral content.
The Clwydian Range — a belt of Silurian and Ordovician shales, mudstones, and sandstones forming the upland ridge west of Prestatyn — provides the primary catchment for the town's reservoir supply. These ancient sedimentary rocks contain little soluble calcium carbonate, and rainfall draining their steep slopes remains naturally soft. Some Carboniferous Limestone crops out at the southern end of the Clwydians and in the Dee valley to the south, contributing a small calcium input to the supply blend, but the overall character remains soft at 84 mg/L.
At 84 mg/L, Prestatyn's soft water is comfortable for domestic use with low limescale demands. Descaling the kettle every two to three months is typically adequate. The combi-boiler benefits from a standard scale inhibitor as a precaution. Washing-up liquid lathers well at normal quantities, and taps and shower heads rarely develop significant limescale deposits. A light monthly clean is all that is generally needed. Residents should note that soft water can be slightly more corrosive to old lead or copper pipework; briefly flushing taps before drawing drinking water is a sensible precaution in older properties along the north Wales coast.
